Danish Comprehensive Cancer Center (DCCC) and Danish Multidisciplinary Cancer Groups (DMCG.dk) hosted the annual conference Danish Cancer Research Days in August for the second time. Participants and stakeholders displayed a great interest, and the conference days were filled with commitment and dialogue about strengths and barriers for further collaboration.

More than 500 participants attended the Danish Cancer Research Days with two days of interdisciplinary knowledge sharing in August. The conference is the biggest conference in Denmark within the field of cancer research.
Current research was highlighted by 167 presented posters. The poster session provided an impressive insight into present Danish cancer research, Chair of DMCG.dk Michael Borre explains: "This year's conference offered exciting presentations and a remarkable selection of abstracts and posters by the highest academic standard. This promises well for future cancer research and treatment. It is crucial to make the valuable new research results implementable to clinical practice," says Michael Borre.

Randi Tobberup is a PhD student at Aalborg University Hospital and was selected to present her results on the main stage based on her submitted abstract.

"The Cancer Research Days are central in Denmark. It is where cancer research activities come together under the same roof. The conference presents a unique platform for interdisciplinary collaboration and academic curiosity. It is the place to network within the field", said Randi Tobberup during the conference.

The organisers emphasise how mutual inspiration and knowledge sharing across disciplines is a key component and purpose of the conference. "Danish Cancer Research Days presents a platform for networking and vital exchange of experiences, that furthers the following everyday collaboration and partnerships," says Michael Borre.

Cooperation is a key drive
Cancer research in Denmark holds a strong position. This came across clearly at the conference, believes Anne Bukh, Chair of the Steering Committee of DCCC.

"The Danish Cancer Research Days forms an opportunity to gain insight in the activities of research environments. Danish researchers and clinicians are top of the line, and they clearly communicate each result and moreover outline the bigger picture of current cancer research. At the same time, it was interesting to hear the perspectives of patients and decision-makers on the main stage", says Anne Bukh.

There was room for discussing possible barriers for collaboration as well – with the purpose of identifying, how and where to improve. "Danish Comprehensive Cancer Center has a purpose of strengthening research networks at a national level, and we have seen how challenges are addressed in the best way when in unison", says Anne Bukh.

At the conference, the themes highlighted cancer care for ageing populations, patient involvement and how we may use clinical registries and patient data in the best way possible. These are all central to the highly targeted cancer treatment of the future.
