Grant received in 2021

DCCC has funded 200,000 DKKK to the preparation of this national and multidisciplinary investigator-initiated study.

Within the last few years, a clinical dilemma is seen with increasing frequency: What do we do, when an early colorectal cancer is accidentally removed by polypectomy? In other words, is supplementary (completion) resection necessary for cure – or is the patient already cured by the polypectomy itself?

Today, this is decided by examining the small tumor, and calculating a theoretical risk of residual disease based on the findings. Based on this, completion resection or just control is recommended. After completion resection, residual disease is found in only around 15 % of cases.

The funding from DCCC give the study an opportunity to prepare a study that examine, if circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) can be measured in the patients with residual disease, whom thereby will benefit from completion resection – and correspondingly, if the absence of ctDNA can predict, if the patient is already cured. If so, it can spare many patients from potentially dangerous colorectal surgery.
