Received grant in 2018

Patients with locally advanced cancer in either lungs or esophagus are offered chemo- and radiotherapy for the purpose of curing the cancer, though non-intended radiation of the heart can cause higher risk of developing a heart disease. Dyslipidemia is another risk for heart diseases that can be reduced with statin treatment.

In this study, the prognostic value of calcium score in coronary vessels before and after radiation therapy is investigated. The results will be compared with the radiation dose given to the heart and rate of survival. Finally the study will investigate whether treatment with statins is connected to better survival for the same patients. The project has received support for protocol preparation.

Multidisciplinary organisation
DCCC COR (Danish Comprehensive Cancer Center Onco-Cardiology) which includes both DOLG and DECV as participants. The study group consists of all Danish centres that are treating esophageal and lung cancer with radiotherapy in collaboration with two cardiological departments.

Project stakeholders
The project is initiated in DCCC COR with representatives from DOLG, DECV, two cardiological departments (at Aarhus University Hospital and the Regional Hospital West Jutland in Herning), Unit of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Aalborg University Hospital and Christies Cancer Centre University of Manchester, UK.
