Managing and treating pregnant women diagnosed with cancer is complex, with two lives to consider. Interdisciplinary national expertise and clinical experience is needed to ensure optimal and individualized handling of the mother and unborn child.
Within the last 15 years, there has been a paradigm shift in the treatment of pregnant women with cancer, recommending (when possible) treatment during pregnancy and avoiding preterm delivery. The clinical experience and recent register-based research suggests that this is not fully implemented, probably due to the rarity of the condition with about 23 new cases annually.
Staging and treatment while managing the pregnancy and family formation demand highly skilled expertise in a multidisciplinary setting. This initiative aims to contribute to quality assurance through the establishment of a national database. Through easily accessible data, the database will contribute to an optimised overview for users and experts as well as exchanging knowledge with an international network.
