How do we improve in preventing colorectal cancer? This was the theme of a successful SATC & DCCC symposium, which gathered experts with different takes on prevention.

In early October, SATCC held a national symposium on individual prevention of colorectal cancer funded by DCCC. The purpose was to gather specialists within prevention of cancer, including specialists on lifestyle, pharmaceutical prevention and biomarkers to establish a network focusing on the collaboration across sectors in the future.

The broader societal perspective was presented by Managing Director of Danish Cancer Society Jesper Fisker and Head of Research in Danish Cancer Society Mef Nilbert among others. They both presented their visions for setting the framework for research in primary prevention of colorectal cancer. Furthermore, Head of Health Committee in Danish Regions Karin Friis Bach presented the Regions' perspective on the prevention area.

The following session on diet, lifestyle and cancer had focus on the possibilities for preventing inflammation and colorectal cancer through diet and nutrition. In the clinical session the acknowledged Professor Anna Martling from Karolinska University Hospital in Sweden presented the results of her large clinical study with aspirin as adjuvant treatment. The closing session was about the use of biomarkers for screening patients in relation to potential effects of primary prevention.

Among the participants there was a shared opinion that it is very beneficial to hear about each others research projects in the field and there is a future hope of establishing a working group to continue the collaboration.
