DCCC-RT reirradiation
Grant received in 2024.
DCCC has funded 190,000 DKK to the initiaive.
Historically, reirradiation for new or recurrent cancer in areas previously treated was only sporadically used due to the risk of severe side effects. Reirradiation is now increasingly common but is only based on data from a few case reports, small retrospective series, or personal experience.
This initiative will initiate a national clinical study for the prospective registration of patients receiving reirradiation. It aims to collect clinical and dosimetric data to establish dose limits for healthy tissue surrounding the tumor. The goal is to ensure knowledge for safe reirradiation with acceptable side effects, allowing more patients to be offered reirradiation with curative, life-extending, or palliative intentions. All departments in Denmark that offer radiotherapy are participating in the working group.
Support from DCCC is allocated for writing the national prospective protocol and for the dose summation work. Additionally, support is provided for VIP salaries to be distributed to key individuals in the project, such as those setting up the Redcap database, creating guidelines and quality assurance for dose summation, data validation, and protocol writing responsibilities.
The initiative expects to hold two residential meetings for about 50 people. The first residential meeting will be used to discuss the design of the study, while the second will be held once inclusion has begun to adjust the study based on experiences from the centers.
Multidisciplinary organisation
The reirradiation group is also part of a new working group (WP4) under DCCC Radiotherapy.
