DCCC has funded 200,000 DKK to the project

During radiotherapy of cancer patients it is important that the radiation will cover the tumor precisely while avoid hitting the healthy
tissue. Therefore, a CT-scan is acquired and both tumor and healthy tissue is delineated. Unfortunately, on a CT-scan it is often hard to distinguish between tumor and healthy tissue.

For this reason, a MR-scan is often acquired, where the difference is more obvious. But using a MR-scan leads to some disadvantages: It takes a long time to acquire, it must be registered to the CT-scan and there is a risk of image-distortion, leading to incorrect delineation. A new technique called Dual-Energy CT (DECT) may give us the best from both the CT- and MR-scan and therefore replace these scans.

The purpose of this project is to start up a national protocol with the goal to clarify the possibilities with DECT on about 20 patients with bony metastasis.

The focus of the study will be on precise delineation of tumor and nerve roots when performed on a DECTscan.

Multidisciplinary organisation
The study is anchored in DCCC Radiotherapy – The Danish National Research Center (DCCC-RT) via ‘IP15’ (Radiotherapy of oligometastatic disease) and ‘WP4’ (Image guided and adaptive radiotherapy).
