Effect of a preoperative oral hygiene intervention on postoperative infections after surgery for bladder- or colorectal cancer: a multi-center study
Grant recieved in 2023
DCCC has founded 190.000 DKK to the initiative.
In recent years, there has been a growing focus on prehabilitative interventions prior to cancer surgery, with the goal of reducing the risk of complications. Studies indicate that addressing systematic oral hygiene prior to surgery can decrease the risk of postoperative complications such as infection, sepsis, and pneumonia. This is attributed to the presence of microorganisms in the oral cavity that can be contagious and contribute to the development of diseases.
The group behind the application aims to investigate the impact of a preoperative effort to improve oral hygiene for patients undergoing surgical treatment for colorectal and bladder cancer. They also intend to investigate the factors influencing the adherence to oral hygiene principles and conduct a financial analysis of the intervention.
DCCC is supporting the preparation of a randomized clinical study aimed at contributing to an evidence-based and targeted approach to combat postoperative infections with the overarching goal of improving patient outcomes.
Multidisciplinary organisation
This national study seeks to establish its foundation within the Danish Center for Cancer Surgery - ACROBATIC, specifically within the clinical focus area of Prehabilitation.
