Received grant in 2025

DCCC has funded 200,000 DKK to this initiative.

Osteoporosis is a common disease that increases the risk of bone fractures. Osteoporosis can occur with age, due to an underlying disease, or if you take certain types of medication. One of the most common causes of osteoporosis is treatment with glucocorticoids such as prednisone. High doses of glucocorticoids are used in the treatment of lymphoma. Studies have shown an increased risk of developing osteoporosis and that more bone fractures are seen in patients who have undergone treatment for lymphoma.

Smaller clinical trials indicate a possibility to prevent osteoporosis in lymphoma patients with bisphosphonate treatment. However powered trials are needed to document a clear reduction in fracture risk before bisphosphonates can be considered a standard therapy for newly diagnosed lymphoma patients.

The aim of this study is to investigate if prophylactic treatment with bisphosphonate can reduce the risk for fractures due to osteoporosis in lymphoma patients receiving glucocorticoid treatment. Thus, the study will assess the potential to offer a simple, cheap and effective preventive treatment of a debilitating late effect on bone health

The grant form DCCC will support protocol writing and the preparation of the study.

Multidisciplinary organisation

The study will be conducted in collaboration with the Danish Lymphoma Group (DLG) and all hematology departments in Denmark.
